Chuck Paulsen for City Council

2009, ASP.NET, XSLT, JQuery, Office Live Small Business

Chuck Paulsen was a candidate for city council of my home town.

City council elections don't attract the massive contributions of state and national elections - so we needed to keep costs as low as possible. I used Microsoft's Office Live Small Business ( OLSB ) as a platform for the site - because it provided free hosting and because it was designed to be updateable by non-technical folks.

OLSB turned out to be surpringly flexible - after getting over the steep XSLT learning curve. I was able to use custom XSLT modules in the site, linking several backend business applications to front end display. On the backend of OLSB is a Sharepoint based collaboration application - the equal of many paid online project management applications. It could easily scale up to handle the needs of a large campaign team.

Notable features:

  • Taps into backend business application to feed Upcoming Events, a Volunteer Opportunity list, a Contributors list, and a Endorsements list.
  • The lists are accessible and editable without needing code - SB Live is a collaboration platform, so a campaign could have a team of people with access to various parts of the system, updating the web site automatically.
  • The contribution form uses jquery to validate data entry against local finance laws - maximum donation is $400. For a donations over $100, the campaign is required to collect more information. The form uses jquery magic to display those extra fields only when necessary - so that visitors are not overwhelmed or turned off by form fields.
  • When valid, the contribution form will connect to PayPal, passing over the contribution amounts.

AA Painting - website for a commercial painter

2009, ASP.NET, JQuery, SEO

AAPainting.biz is the business site of a painting contractor in Honolulu, HI.

Notable features:

  • Uses a neat JQuery slideshow that preloads images such that the interface is very responsive & there is little to no lag to see the photos.
  • Uses C# ASP.NET to process the contact form
  • A slightly transparent image frame
  • A fixed footer using CSS - such that the footer sticks to the bottom of the screen regardless of the content.
  • This site is working nicely in all browsers
  • Performed some SEO - got site listed on the major engines; got third listing on Google for "residential painting honolulu" - the target market
  • There is still much to be done on the site - I am waiting on client to submit guidance on the text content of the site - as well as more pictures

BuyThisMiata.com

2009, ASP.NET, C#, JQuery

A quick site I put together to help with selling a car.

The panel interface is a JQuery UI script. The Photo slideshow is a Flash script by Shizam that I cribbed from my photosharing user forum.

Virtual Earth Mashup

2008, ASP.NET, C#, SQL Server 2005

Map Site is a Virtual Earth web application that I have been working on - slowly - Original idea was to create a site for storing and displaying scuba diving sites, submitted by members.  The early versions were built using javascript on a SQL '05 db. The current version uses the new ASP.NET map control in C# and the SQL '05 db. The social aspects are on backburner - perhaps version 2.0, lol. Links to the site and my project notes are here.

Breakmaster

2004, MS Access, VBA

A simple desktop db to keep track of breaks & lunches in a retail store. Very, very simple database ... 3 tables. No real security, but we didn't really need any: we just needed a tool to help keep folks honest with break times. Download
